Most of us are under the impression that higher PageRank is achieved by having more inbound links to your website. This is not the case however. There are pages on the web today that have thousands of links pointed to them, yet the PageRank which it has received is relatively low. On the other hand, you might find pages with not having (seemingly) sufficient links pointed to them, yet their page rank is higher.

The truth is that PageRank is a ranking system that set’s a value on the importance of your presence in the network of websites that you are part of. If your linking partners have a higher PageRank, than you will reep the benefits and gain more points to your overall ranking. It is also important to note that Google will look at the similarities of content as well. If you have words on your pages that match your linking partners, then it is safe to assume that Google will see this relationship as a true partnership.

You can also improve your PageRank by systematically creating an internal linking structure that will add to your PageRank. Google does not only look at links from other websites, but also at links within your website pointing to your pages. Therefore it is best to first have a clear understanding of how PageRank works, rather than to go out and start trading links which could ultimately work against you.

The short answer is this. Trade links with websites that have a higher PageRank than your own and also choose linking partners that have similar content. It is safer to create a hierarchy system of links within your pages, rather than to have all links displayed on all of your pages as this will work against you since each page would be considered as having an equal importance within your website. Usually the homepage should have the honor being most important.
